Texts:

Mismeasure of Woman by Carol Tavris, Simon and Schuster, 1992.

Manhood in America: A Cultural History by Michael S. Kimmel, Oxford University Press 2006

Objectives and Purpose

To provide the student with an understanding of the male and female roles in the U.S. Society.

To provide current information regarding recent changes in the roles of men and women in a global society.

To broaden student understanding of how gender changes affect the larger society.

To provide an interactive forum for student expression and discussion.

To create a learning environment for the examination of gender issues - both academic and personal.

Through examining the place of men and women in today's society, the student will develop a deeper appreciation of the magnitude of complex gender changes taking place. The student will have increased understanding of the ramifications of those changes both to individual lives and to social institutions, from the family to the workplace. The class sessions will provide a forum for students to express their views in an interactive setting. Both men’s and women’s roles will be examined, although the material studied focuses on women. By the end of the class the student will have an increased knowledge of gender expectations and the role they play in societal behavior.

Instruction: This course will consist of reading academic material and discussing it in the class setting. Students are expected to have completed the reading assignment for the day, prepared notes on the reading, and be ready to participate in the class discussion. Short reflection papers on the reading are due the day of class. In addition to class material, each student will be required to prepare a presentation on a topic chosen from a list given to the students in class. The student will prepare handouts for other students in the class and a more detailed paper for the instructor.

Grading:

40%    Two papers – turned in and also presented to class

25%    Midterm

25%    Final

10%    Discussion

Papers

Students will write two papers during the semester. The first will be on a man or woman that is notable in their contribution to the changing gender roles of their society. The second will be on a social situation that either needs to change or has changed because of the changing gender roles.

Papers will be 8 pages long (12 pt Times Roman font) – excluding the Sources page. Students will use at least three different sources – which will be listed on the last page. Students should prepare a brief one page outline/summary to hand out to other students when making their presentation. Presentations will be very short – 5-10 minutes.
